Portrait of Sasha Mozdir

Neetu Sharma is a children’s author, illustrator and storyteller with a long-standing interest in creating books that encourage children to read, imagine, make and participate.

Her work spans picture books, activity and craft books, educational resources and creative kits. She has written and illustrated books for children as well as illustrated the work of other authors.

Her books have been published by National Book Trust, India, Scholastic India, Kiddy Tales and Anannya Prakashan, and several have been translated into Indian languages and reprinted multiple times.

A Hands-on Approach to Children’s Books

A distinctive feature of Neetu’s work is her experimentation with handmade illustration. Her books have used techniques ranging from pencil colour and paper craft to hand embroidery and Play-Doh modelling, with the physical artwork sometimes photographed and transformed into the finished book illustrations.

Her craft and activity books encourage children to create things themselves using simple, easily available materials. Some have also been used as resources by teachers and schools.

Stories Beyond the Page

Neetu’s work extends beyond books into storytelling, role-play, craft activities and workshops. She has conducted storytelling and creative sessions for children in schools and at children’s literature festivals, including Bookaroo and FILBO, Colombia.

Her stories have also found their way into children’s performances and role-play, and her work has extended into radio and digital storytelling.

Connecting Indian Art & Children’s Stories

Neetu is particularly interested in bringing Indian stories, art and cultural traditions into books for young readers in an accessible and engaging way.

Her current project, Valmiki Ramayan Demystified, combines a retelling of the Ramayan for children with Madhubani-inspired artwork.

A Note from Neetu

“I have always believed that children don’t just want to read a story, they want to enter it, play with it and sometimes make it themselves. This has shaped the way I write, illustrate and create books.”
