About the Project
Valmiki Ramayan Demystified is a thoughtfully illustrated retelling of the Valmiki Ramayan for young readers, created to make the ancient epic accessible, engaging and easy to approach while retaining the essence of the original story.
The book combines a child-friendly narrative with Madhubani-inspired illustrations, bringing the characters, events and visual world of the Ramayan together in a distinctive Indian artistic language.
Why This Project
The project is designed for children who are ready to encounter the Ramayan but may find the original text and its many layers difficult to approach. It aims to offer young readers a clear, engaging entry into one of India’s great epics, while allowing them to experience the story through a strongly Indian visual tradition.
The Art: Madhubani-inspired Illustration
The illustrations are an integral part of the project. The Madhubani-inspired visual language provides a distinctive Indian identity to the book, using pattern, line, colour and decorative elements to create a rich visual world for young readers.
From Book to Digital Storytelling
The Ramayan project has also developed into a digital storytelling series — an animated YouTube series bringing episodes from the Valmiki Ramayan to young audiences, giving publishers a chance to see how the project extends beyond the printed book.
